A latterday Romantic, Arnold Bax lost ground in the 1950s, as the British critical establishment sought to promote more recent musical trends to gain ground abroad. Bax's rhapsodic genius and brilliant sense of orchestration eventually won him new audiences in the 1980s and 1990s. His Seventh Symphony, his last, occurred late enough to incur the wrath of critics who wanted to push only serialists and post-serialists in the UK, who sneered at the lush melody and transformational power of the work. It has only been appreciated in full since the avant-garde of the mid-20th century became the arrière-garde of the 21st.
